Writing a Covering Letter
The covering letter should not be a long-winded affair. At
most it should be five paragraphs in length, ideally it should
be three or four. It is best if the letter is typed, using a
clear and easy to read typeface.
Please ensure the letter is addressed to the correct person
(if you do not know who to send your application to, please
contact the school or local authority and find out). Please
also include the person's job title when addressing the letter.
Make sure you also date the letter and include a subject line
(re: application for English teacher position, or the job
application reference number if there is one).
The first paragraph of your letter should be an expression
of interest in the position and should then go on to give a
brief explanation of how you fit the role and why you should be
invited to interview.
Your second paragraph should describe your previous
experience and the practical use of those skills which are
required for the post.
Finally, end the letter by again highlighting your
suitability to the job and maybe also express some enthusiasm
about the possibility of joining the team.
As with your CV, you should check it carefully to ensure
there are no spelling or grammar mistakes. If possible, ask a
friend or your consultant to check it for you.
