Business Manager

Meet Maxine, one of Randstad Education's business managers

  1. Can you tell me about your education and training?

I've had a good secondary education and have gone back to college over the years, I have previously trained to be a secretary. During my time in recruitment I have been on various courses.

  2. Can you tell me about your role?

Business manager, which is overseeing, motivating and leading a team. I see myself as a facilitator of ideas and push the team to work out of their comfort zones to ensure that we are different to our competitors. Never is a day the same. I am constantly being pushed, and my senses are tested whilst making and challenging my decision-making skills. I have the opportunity to work closely with my clients and develop ideas, for example we work closely with Barnardo's which is a partnership that has grown from a relationship I developed. I get to arrange seminars so that peer groups can share best practice and we arrange for leaders in the field of education to share their experiences. I visit my clients and get to see the outstanding work which is being carried out within the schools in our area.

  3. What are the main challenges about your role?

Trying to work out how to fit everything into one day! My planning and time management skills have definitely improved. I am an excellent juggler and director, however our biggest challenge is being able to find enough teachers to fill all the bookings we have!

  4. What do you most enjoy about your job?

I love every part of my job; every day is completely different and rewarding. The passion of the industry is infectious, the various different types of people that you deal with on a daily basis ensure that no two days are the same. I just enjoy coming to work.

  5. What is a typical day at work for you?

There is no such thing as a typical day, however ever day is amazing and fun. Imagine the phone ringing non-stop, schools calling for teachers, teachers giving you their availability, and arranging for the right teachers to go to the right schools. We also spend a lot of time with our schools. I visit our special educational needs schools on a weekly basis and have the opportunity to spend time with the students, hosting CV writing and interview skills workshops, which I find very rewarding but also very challenging.

I also get to see the team achieve each and every day. There is nothing more satisfying and rewarding than getting it right with both teachers and schools saying thank you.

  6. What are the requirements and skills you need to do your job?

You MUST be able to think on your feet and have a care and passion for getting it right first time. You must remember that we are working with children and that they are our future. You need to be a problem solver, a motivator, be passionate and able to THINK outside of the box.

  7. Do you travel often?

I travel and visit all schools weekly. There is nothing like seeing your staff in action.

  8. Why did you join Randstad Education?

I wanted to work for a supportive and rewarding organisation. I also wanted to be part of the best and to grow and develop with an organisation.

  9. What would you say to someone thinking about joining Randstad Education?

If you have a passion for recruitment and want to work for a company that rewards success, offers training and development to all, and treats you as a human being, then this is the organisation for you.
